Obesity has become a major threat lately, affecting people of all age groups around the world. Unhealthy dietary habits and changing lifestyles are two important factors that have caused an increase in the incidence of such noncommunicable diseases. Intake of additional calories and bad fat by consuming junk food and sugary beverages is on the hike, leading to unhealthy weight gain.

Consumers resort to processed and convenience foods due to the lean time frames and busy schedules they have. However, this affects the intake of essential nutrients such as fibre, vitamins and minerals, which are required in optimum quantities by the body. Obesity greatly increases the risks of other life style diseases such as diabetes and cardiac problems.

The sedentary lifestyle practices adopted by majority of the urban population have led to insufficient physical activity, which affects the balance of energy input and output, leading to conditions such as obesity. Although diet and physical activities are critical factors that impacts the weight of an individual, certain other elements such as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), hormonal imbalance, lack of proper sleep and genetic factors also play a pivotal role.

Obesity not only affects the overall health of an individual but also affects one’s social life. Fighting obesity is the need of the hour. Undertaking certain measures such as keeping a control on the diet and involvement in moderate physical activities to keep fit are imperative to decrease the incidence of this deadly disorder. Consuming a healthy meal that includes all essential micronutrients and macronutrients are fundamental to lead a healthy life.
